Convert Web Visitors in Buying Customers

February 2006

Just because your web site has hundreds of visits a day and great search engine rankings, doesn't mean those visits will covert into a sale. You may be surprised to learn that your web site design could actually be turning potential buyers away.

Reason #1: Web Site is too Slow

Internet users have no patience. If a web site doesn't load fast enough, users will click away and are on to the next web site before you even have a change to tell them about your product.

Just because internet broadband connections exist doesn't mean all of your visitors have them. Be sure the graphics on your site are kept to a minimum and larger images are fully optimized. This will help your dial-up customers browse your web site quickly to find what they need.

Fast loading web pages are a must for any successful web site. In general, it should take no longer than 20 seconds to load a page on a dial-up connection, and no longer than 10 seconds on broadband.

So now that your visitors can see your web content, lets keep them on the web site.

Reason #2: Web Site is Unprofessional

First impressions are everything, especially if you plan to conduct business on the web. A professional design gives the impression that you're serious about your business. Bright colored backgrounds and ducks and bunnies probably aren't going to cut it for most businesses. Make sure your web site contains contact information, this way customers feel comfortable that they can reach someone if their is a problem.

Reason #3: Poor Navigation

If the navigation on your web site isn't consistent you're sure to confuse your customer. This could result in a lost sale. Be sure that all of your links" make sense" and are easily visible to the customer. This will not only make the web site user friendly, but will encourage visitors to keep looking.

You should always view your web site through the eyes of a customer. Ask your friends and co-workers to take a look at your web site and get their feedback. Sometimes making the smallest change, makes the biggest difference.
